If that doesn't do it, you need to figure out if this is a hardware or software issue. If it's 1 (your original assessment), you can try resetting the PRAM and SMC as a quick fix. A bad image file in either of these could cause the screen saver to crash. Sounds crazy, but it's true iPhoto photos can be used as a screen saver as can iTunes cover art. If the issue is user-specific, try a different screen saver or try creating a blank iPhoto library or a blank iTunes library. If you see that the computer is waking up at the times you expect, then screen saver may be crashing. The Console logs may or may not show a crash, but they always show a WAKE event. With 2, try turning off screen saver or looking at the Console logs. Try with a different display or try logging in remotely to see if the computer is working without its display. With 3, it could be the display, the adapters, or the cables you're using. If it were 4, you may see some things on screen like your mouse cursor, but the screen would be mostly black.
So, if the power button doesn't work, that rules out 5 and 6. Before you start trying to "fix" the problem, you need to identify the problem. (The power button should work to wake it up though).Īnd there may be other possibilities I'm forgetting right now.
The reason they are annoying is because you may not readily be able to tell what's going on with it.
